Update on Luke & Oliver

I must apologize having neglected this blog for a long time. Life went through a lot of upheavals, changes and moves. Luke passed away just before Christmas in 2014, after being reunited with his human dad in Texas, where he was born and lived most of his life before spending a few happy years under my care in CT. Now he is running in the open fields with his pals Boomer and Frisco chasing rabbits and squirrels (but never catching any). Luke was the first of the labs I’ve taken care of to enter my life, although not directly with me. He was brought home by two of my closest friends when he was a puppy. Him and his human mom also came along when I went to the local lab rescue to look at a dog I was interested in. Luke didn’t like that dog, but we met another one that he hit if off with. He was a 102 lb yellow lab named Frisco and he came home with me. A year later my friends brought home the most adorable giant black ball of fur and named him Oliver, and the three dogs often hung out together as did we humans. Then life did a few twists and turns and Frisco and I ended up moving to CT, waving goodbye to Luke and Oliver. Frisco was 6 when...

Easy Homemade Chicken Jerky Dog Treats

Since FDA warnings about chicken jerky treats have made many puppies unhappy missing their treats, I figured I’d share a really easy recipe to make chicken jerky treats at home. My dogs love these, and I know they are getting healthy treats with no additives or chemicals. FDA Warnings About Chicken Jerky Treats Ingredients: 6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or whatever quantity you want to prepare). Instructions: Remove any visible fat...

Turkey Bone Escapade

Anytime Oliver goes off on his own to another room I run a mental check list of whether I remembered to put toilet cover down, all the trash in the metal bin with the cover closed and so on, and a few weeks ago was no different. But I knew everything dangerous he could get into was safely out of his reach and did not think much of it… until I heard a very loud “thunk” noise coming from the kitchen. But even then my first thought was that I had left the dishwasher unlocked and he had opened...

Yogurt or Probiotic Supplements For Dogs

I was hanging out on Google+ earlier and came across an argument about dogs and yogurt. Someone called someone else a bad dog person (they did use stronger wording than that…) for giving their dog yogurt and after that it was pretty much mud been slung both ways. I didn’t get involved there but here’s what I think. It is true that dogs are lactose intolerant, although different dogs have different sensitivity levels. But as a rule they should not be given milk as it can cause diarrhea, gas and discomfort. The argument however was specifically about whether it...
